The Winix 9500 Ultimate Pet air purifier is appealing because it has several features of the high end air purifiers but at a much more reasonable price point. This unit works in spaces up to 283 sq. ft. so it will be most useful in bedrooms or similarly sized spaces. Find the Winix 9500 here on Amazon.
If you need something larger, I still highly recommend the Alen BreatheSmart. If you already plan to use this in your bedroom or home office, then read on because this little unit has a lot to offer.
How does the Winix 9500 Ultimate Pet clean the air?
The Winix 9500 Ulitmate Pet air purifier is designed to eliminate pet dander and odor from the air in your home. It will eliminate that lingering pet smell and any pet dander that may have been in the air. After using this just in his bedroom at night while his dog slept nearby, one user said it kept his sinuses clean so that he no longer woke up with a runny nose. Additionally, he no longer smells the usual pet smell in his home anymore.
If you don’t have a pet, this unit will also clean smoke, cooking and harmful VOC chemical smells in your home. It will eliminate dust and dirt from the air too.
To provide this sort of relief, the Winix 9500 has a 5-stage filtration system. On the exterior panel of the air purifier you will see a washable pre-filter. This traps larger, visible particles like hair and lint. You can clean this by removing and washing it or running the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner over it.
Then, the air passes through the True HEPA filter that traps microscopic particles as small as 0.3 microns. This means it is getting rid of unwanted dust and pet dander that is not visible to the naked eye! I love knowing that it is removing nasty debris in the air before I have to inhale it. It makes me think of the old adage, “Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.”
One downside to almost all of the high end air purifiers, is that their filters need to be replaced periodically. I mention this so you can consider this expense before purchasing. The average cost and life of the filters that fit your machine may differ and impact your initial purchase. The All-in-One filter cassette for the Winix 9500 needs to be replaced approximately every 12 months. Built in replacement sensors will alert you with a light on the control panel when the filter needs to be changed.
After the HEPA filter, the air starts the CleanCel Anti-Bacterial treatment phase. This is another method to clean the air but it is not an actual filter. This is good news because it won’t need to be replaced!
Then the air goes through a granular carbon filter to eliminate pet, smoke, and cooking odors. Winix calls this the Advanced Odor Control stage. The carbon filter can be washed and it is recommended to do this every three months. When it is time to replace the HEPA filter the entire filter cassette will be replaced.
PlasmaWave is the final cleaning phase. PlasmaWave is Winix technology but it is similar to the ionizers in other brands of air purifiers. Both positive and negative ions are generated and they attach to the particles in the air creating plasma clusters. This neutralizes germs, bacteria, viruses, chemical vapors and odors in the air. It can be turned on or off per your preference, but the user manual recommends that it be left on continuously.
After passing the air through these five filtration stages, 99.99% of pet dander, hair, allergens, dust, and odors are eliminated from the air you breathe.
A word of caution when buying an entry level air purifier. Make sure that the machine is not creating ozone which is harmful. The Winix 9500 does not emit ozone. Secondly, some less expensive models of air filters do not have a seal around the HEPA filter so air containing dirt and bacteria become trapped in the unit. Thus, the returned air that is assumed to be clean is actually dirty. To avoid this, look for one like the Winix 95000 that uses an air filter cassette. This should prevent the leaking of air around the air filter. It can be more costly to replace this type of filter, but should ensure that the filter is working properly and the air you are breathing is clean.
When using an air filter in a bedroom, other elements like noise level and bright lights need to be considered as they may affect your sleep. I have read reviews of other brands of air purifiers where the users complain of the lights on the control panel being too bright and keeping them awake. Winix solved this problem by creating an auto-dim feature. This feature detects the ambient light in the room and dims the control panel lights when the room is dark.
After reading many reviews related to the noise level of this machine, the consensus among users is that it is a very quiet machine. The highest fan setting emits the most noise but it is still not very loud and sounds more like white noise. The medium and low fan settings are virtually inaudible. There is some debate about whether the PlasmaWave feature makes too much noise. However, it can be turned off. If it bothers you, turn it on during the day and off when you sleep.
The Winix 9500 has Smart Sensors that will regularly monitor the air. When it detects an increase in pollutants, it will automatically adjust the fan speed to clean the air. You can just turn it on and let it do the work for you.
If you prefer to manually adjust the settings, you can do this from the control panel or with the remote. The remote is a useful feature, especially if this unit is in the bedroom. You can control the four fan speeds, PlasmaWave, and turn it on/off from the comfort of your bed.
The Winix 9500 Ultimate Pet Air Purifier is really a great air purifier at a lower price point. It may not have all of the bells and whistles of a $1000 model, but it doesn’t cost that much either! Amazon carries this model at a very affordable price. Based on the price and the added features it does have, I would recommend this air purifier to anyone, especially pet owners!
